"All Downhill From Here" Wall Art
41 x 91 cm
paint, fabric collage, hand and machine embroidery
A stunning fibre landscape of a rushing river. Crafted using a variety of embroidery and sewing techniques, along with painted and collaged fabrics.
Care Instructions: Do not hang the work where it will receive exposure to direct sunlight. The sun will fade colours and weaken the fibres of the cloth. Dust lightly with a soft, clean paintbrush. Should you decide to put needlework behind glass, please leave at least 0.5cm between the textile surface and the glass. Otherwise, lack of air circulation could result in mildewing and condensation.
Bettina Matzkuhn works in the textile medium. Using machine and hand embroidery, paint, and collage, she values the familiar and versatile language of textiles. She lives in Vancouver, BC and much of her work is inspired by her surrounding landscape as well as travels beyond. In the 1980s, she began using textiles in National Film Board Animated films. These garnered awards and an interest in narrative continues to inform her work. With a BFA in Visual Arts and an MA in Liberal Studies from Simon Fraser University, Matzkuhn is the recipient of Canada Council and BC Arts Council Grants. Stories about ecology, history, and geography appear in her embroidered sculptural sails, maps and experimental pieces and she has even collaborated with meteorologists and marine biologists. Matzkuhn has exhibited in solo exhibitions across Canada and her work has been included in shows in Korea and the USA. Public collections include the Surrey Art Gallery, Cambridge Art Galleries and the University of Western Ontario’s Weldon Map Library, as well as private collections. She writes professionally on the arts, lectures, teaches and volunteers.
