glass bead, sterling silver
These sandstone earrings are an elegant accessory that reminds one of the beautiful layers of sediment found in nature. Cathy makes every lightweight hollow glass bead by hand by melting coloured rods in a torch. She shapes each bead uniquely, then anneals them in a digitally controlled kiln. Once the beads are cool, she etches them for a soft matte finish.
Cathy has been designing, making and selling jewellery since 2012. She has an extensive background in visual and text communication, and taught graphic design for 12 years through BCIT and Emily Carr University. She learned glass beadmaking from Joanne Andrighetti over a period of three years, and is an active member of Terminal City Glass Co-op.
Her work is inspired by a combination of location, aesthetic, and practicality, and is designed to be worn everyday by women of the west coast.
